Amazon.com rivals Wal-Mart as a store, Apple as a device maker, and IBM as a data services provider. It will rake in about $75 billion this year. For his book, Bloomberg Businessweek’s Brad Stone spoke to hundreds of current and former friends of founder Jeff Bezos. In the process, he discovered the poignant story of how Amazon became the Everything Store.

The secret to finding high quality educational iOS apps – EduBloggery

If you’re looking to spread your digital wings a bit, you probably want to find some of the highest quality educational iOS apps available. You probably head over to the official Apple App Store on your chosen iDevice and check out the ‘featured’ area and perhaps the ‘Top Sellers’ list. That’s great and a solid way to see what is being used on devices around the world.

For the most part, though, all those top apps are either just big names or have had some recent promotion. As someone who once made an iPad app, I know what it’s like to try and get your app onto one of those promoted areas in the App Store. You would do just about anything because, as I found out, your sales and download numbers skyrocket as soon as you crack the top 100 apps in your category.

So how should you avoid the crazy featured and top sellers lists? By becoming familiar with the category filters, of course!

One of the undoubted successes in the application and game development world has been iPhone/iPod Touch development. The recent announcement of the one billionth download from Apple‘s App Store is testament to that fact.

For those just getting started, or wishing to include iPhone development as part of their course Stanford University has released an iPhone Application Programming course. Comprising a set of PDFs with accompanying lectures available on iTunes the course covers everything from the basics of getting started with Cocoa to publishing on the App Store.

Definitely worth a look.

It’s Monday and you’re back at work. It’s not good. So, at lunch time only of course, why not try the on-line Apple ][ emulator.

About Virtual Apple ][
Virtual Apple ][ is a site which will take you back to the 1980’s through its collection of more than 1250 game disks online. Play and enjoy old Apple ][ (Apple2) and Apple IIgs games and other disks through your Internet web browser. You will find games like Oregon Trail and Number Munchers which many of you played as kids, as well as games like Tetris, Battle Chess, Leisure Suit Larry, Choplifter, Archon II and Kings Quest.

I started on one of these more years ago than I care to remember and, while my school would have no truck with the games available here, I lusted after them from afar.

Just make sure you eat before you start or you’ll get sucked in and not remember.

Flash Based eLearning

Flash is a tremendous tool but not even its best friends would describe it as user-friendly. That’s a shame as some of its features are perfect for eLearning purposes.

To address this Adobe have posted some easy instructions for creating Flash based quizzes that are even SCORM compliant.

This works really well and the quizzes can be slightly more student friendly (or flashy if you’ll excuse the pun) than some other tools produce.
